1.) Apply for a New Jersey substitute certificate

woman thinking

There are two types of substitute teaching certificates/credentials in New Jersey. The 60-credit substitute credential, and the 30-credit substitute credential. Both credentials allow you to be a substitute teacher, but the requirements to obtain them are different.

These credentials allow you to substitute teach for a maximum of 20 days per classroom in a year. If necessary, the school you’re subbing at can request up to a 20-day extension from the Executive County Superintendent. Each credential is valid for 5 years from the date you receive it. Here are the requirements to obtain each one:

60-Credit Instructional Substitute Credential

  • Have at least 60+ semester-hour credits at a regionally accredited college or university OR be currently enrolled with a minimum of 30 semester-hour credits. Verification of your enrollment will be required.
  • Get criminal background clearance. The approval date must be within 5 months of the application date with “Substitute Teacher” as the job position.

30-Credit Instructional Substitute Credential

  • Have at least 30+ semester-hour credits at a nationally accredited college or university OR be currently enrolled at the time of application. Verification of your enrollment will be required.
  • Be at least 20 years of age.
  • Get criminal background clearance. The approval date must be within 5 months of the application date with “Substitute Teacher” as the job position.

All prospective substitute teachers must apply for a credential on NJEDCert.

On NJEDCert, you’ll need to complete the background questions and the oath of allegiance. Next, you’ll submit the application and pay the $125 processing fee. It takes 6-8 weeks for your credential to be processed and issued. Be sure to check your account periodically to view the status of your application.

2.) Undergo a background check

As part of the application process, you will need to undergo a background check. The process is different depending on whether you’re a new applicant or a returning one.

  • New Applicants – candidates who have never worked for a school in the state of New Jersey
  • Archive applicants – candidates who have worked for a school in New Jersey and are changing school districts. This only applies to candidates who have been fingerprinted after March 2003

The process for both categories is similar with slight variations.

  1. Seek a sponsor organization or school district for criminal history record clearance. This can include a teacher staffing company like Scoot Education.
  2. Pay the $10 administrative fee for the background clearance on the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) Office of Student Protection website. There’s also a $1 convenience fee.
  3. Choose from either the “New Applicant” or “Archive Applicant” selection, fill out all the information, and make the payment. You also have to print out and complete the IdentoGO New Jersey Universal Fingerprint Form, which can be downloaded from the linked website.
  4. Schedule an appointment on the IdentoGO website by selecting the digital fingerprinting option at the bottom of the page. The fingerprinting price is $66.05 for those who have never been fingerprinted in the state of New Jersey (new applicants), and $29.75 if you have been fingerprinted in the state after March 2003 (archive applicants). If you’re applying through Scoot, we will reimburse you for the fingerprinting fees on your first paycheck – just remember to keep your receipt!
  5. Attend the appointment and get fingerprinted. Be sure to bring a photo ID and the IdentoGO New Jersey Universal Fingerprint Form.

In approximately two weeks, you’ll be able to view the results of your background check on the Office of Student Protection Status Webpage.

3.) Submit an application

Once you have received your substitute teacher credential and passed a background check, you can contact your sponsoring organization about available substitute teaching positions and submitting applications.

If you’re applying with Scoot, just fill out one online application to sub at a variety of schools. Ready to sub with us? Apply today. We require each applicant to:

  1. Upload a form of government ID (e.g., a passport)
  2. Prove your authorization to work in the United States
  3. Submit three references. One of them must be a past or present supervisor.

4.) Why sub with an agency?

Why substitute teach?

substitute teach in Houston now

Whether you want to be in education long-term or are just doing this in between jobs, substitute teaching can help you expand your resume and life experience.

Make a difference in your community

Substitute teachers are incredibly valuable to their school districts and students.

When teachers have to call out of work, it is the substitutes who help keep schools open.

Furthermore, even if you only see your students for one day out of the week, you become an essential person who helps keep students’ education on track.

Learn transferable job skills

Regardless if you want to be in education long-term or are just doing this in between jobs, substitute teaching can help you expand your resume.

As a sub, you will pick up on valuable career skills such as public speaking, thinking on your feet, and problem solving. These abilities can help you no matter where you go in your career.

Create your own schedule

Arguably the best part about being a sub is that you can make your own schedule. You can pick and choose which assignments you want to take on and which days you want to take off.

This flexibility is especially helpful for those with other responsibilities in their life.

Earn extra money

In addition to creating your own schedule, you can earn money on the side of your current job! Since you can choose the hours and days you would like to work, you can easily substitute teach on days you’re available.

Have fun everyday

In contrast to a regular 9-5 office job, substitute teaching comes with exciting adventures every day. Different teaching assignments can bring you to new schools, students, and peers, giving you the opportunity to learn something new every day!

Become a Texas substitute teacher

This school year, you can help Houston students by becoming their substitute teacher!

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) gives its school districts and service centers unique control over their substitute teacher requirements so the requirements for one district won’t be the same as another.

Fortunately, many Texas districts share requirements, which we’ve gathered below.

Step 1) Get your transcripts

Most Texas districts have an education requirement for their substitute teachers.

We have listed each district’s education minimum requirements below:

  • Aldine ISD: 60 college credit hours, a teaching certificate or a college degree
  • Bridge City ISD (BCISD): A high school diploma or a GED
  • Cypress Fairbanks ISD (CFISD): 48 college credit hours
  • Fort Bend ISD (FBISD): 60 college credit hours
  • Goose Creek Consolidated ISD (GCCISD): 45 college credit hours or an Associate’s degree.
    • This district will only accept a Texas State Teaching Certificate if you have a college degree.
  • Houston ISD: 60 college credit hours or a Bachelor’s degree in ANY subject
  • Humble ISD: 60 hours or more from a college/university
  • Katy ISD: 60 college credit hours
  • Lamar Consolidated ISD (LCISD): A high school diploma or a GED
  • Pasadena ISD: 30 semester hours of college credit
  • Pearland ISD: 60 college credit hours
    • This district will also accept a Texas Teaching Certificate instead of college credit hours
  • Spring ISD: 48 college credit hours or a Substitute Teacher Certification from an accredited Texas entity or Education Center
  • Stafford Municipal School District (SMSD): 60 college credit hours in addition to a high school diploma or a GED
    • If you have completed 60 college credit hours or your college degree is in a non-education related field, you must complete either package A or package B of the online sub training courses offered on stedi.org.

You’ll have to submit your transcripts and teaching certificate in step 3.

Step 2) Reach out to your professional references

Some of these Texas school districts will ask you to submit between 1 and 3 professional references with your substitute application. We generally recommend having at least 3 former or current supervisors’ contact information for this step.

Please keep in mind that friends and family members are NOT acceptable references to use.

You should first let your references know that the district will reach out to them!

Step 3) Complete an application

You must submit your transcripts, applicable substitute teacher certification, references and other required information through your school district’s website. Positions are only open for a limited time so apply quickly when you see an opening.

Below, we have linked each Houston school district’s website to view their application portal:

Each school district has their own qualifications for their substitute teachers in Texas and it can be pretty confusing trying to navigate them.

If you want to apply to a new Texas school district, you’ll have to submit an entirely new substitute teachers application. Fortunately, subbing with Scoot means you only have to submit one application to be eligible for all Texas substitute positions, regardless of the district!

Step 4) Get your criminal history background check

The only requirement set by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is that all substitute teachers in Texas must pass a criminal history background check. Whether you plan to substitute teach in a Texas public, private or charter school, you must complete this check.

You can’t complete this step until your school district requests it.

Once the school district makes a request, you’ll have to pay a $40.00 fee to get your background check done.

If you sub with Scoot, you’ll be reimbursed for the $40.00 fee! Just keep your receipt and we’ll add it to your first paycheck.

Step 5) Get ready to substitute teach

Some Texas school districts might request that you complete a mandatory orientation session before you are listed as an active substitute in their system.

They might also contact you to go through an interview process.

Once everything is complete, you just have to wait until you’re contacted. You’ll typically be placed on a Texas substitute teacher list and will be notified when a position opens up.

How to Get Your Nevada Substitute Teaching License https://scoot.education/scoot-guides/how-to-get-your-nevada-substitute-teaching-license/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 10:26:59 +0000 https://scoot.education/?p=15015 Nevada is known as one of the fastest growing states in the U.S. The increase of population size in the Silver State results in a greater need for educators in our local schools. Thousands of students are ready to learn how to be tomorrow’s leaders and are eager to meet passionate educators. Support your local schools by becoming a Nevada substitute teacher.

But how do you become a Nevada sub? What are the requirements to get a Nevada substitute teaching license?

In this guide, we’ll introduce to you the two substitute licenses in Nevada as well as how to apply online and get a background check.

Want a PDF that summarizes the steps on how to sub in Nevada?

Download the Scoot guide

Nevada Substitute Teaching Licenses

Before you can get started in the classroom, you need a substitute teaching license. The Nevada Department of Education (NDE) requires it.

With it, you can teach all subjects in all grade levels from Pre-K to 12th grade.

There are two options you can apply for: Standard or Emergency.

Nevada substitute license qualifications and details

Standard Substitute Teacher License

To apply for the standard substitute teacher license,  you must have a minimum of 60 college credits. This license will last you 5 years and is renewable online.

Standard subs can teach for an unlimited number of days.

Emergency Substitute Teacher License

Want to sub, but you’re just shy of 60 college credits? Apply for the Emergency License with just your high school diploma. This license will last you 1 year. Renew it up to 2 times.

At this time, public schools NO longer accept emergency substitute teacher licenses. However, some private and charter schools still allow educators to fill in for a vacancy if you have this license.

Special Limitations for the Emergency License

This license allows subs to work specifically in rural districts and schools with less than 9,000 students. A list of these counties and rural schools can be found on the NDE website.

Emergency substitutes can only teach up to 5 days out of every 20-day period.

Considering these limitations, we recommend only applying for this license if you don’t have the 60 college credits.

Steps to apply for a substitute teacher license in Nevada

Step 1: Fill out your application online

Create an OPAL account to complete and submit your license application there.

OPAL is the NDE’s Online Portal for Applications and Licensure. OPAL makes the application process faster for all education applicants. It can take 4-8 weeks for your application to get processed.

It will also send you email and text notifications as your application moves through each stage of the process until you’re finally licensed!

Step 2: Send official transcripts

After you submit your application, have your institution send official documents to transripts@doe.nv.gov.

  • For Emergency, send your high school transcripts.
  • For Standard, send your official university transcripts.

Step 3: Complete a background check

All educators must submit their fingerprints to the FBI to check for any criminal history before stepping in the classroom.

Follow these steps to get your background check:

  1. Complete a background authorization form.
  2. Get your fingerprinting done at a NVDPS approved LiveScan location.
  3. You will be guided through the process when you arrive to complete your LiveScan.
  4. Scoot reimburses up to $65 for the live scan in your first paycheck.

Here are the NVDPS approved LiveScan locations in Las Vegas.

If you work with Scoot, note that you will have to submit your fingerprints TWICE: once with the state and once with Scoot. This is because the state and employers cannot share your results.

Step 4: Apply to school districts

Once you’re certified, you can apply for employment with your nearest county school district.

If you apply to be a substitute teacher with Scoot Education, we’ll help you find assignments with ease. Partner with us and find the right school and classroom fit for you.

Life as a Nevada Substitute Teacher

Curious about what a day in the life of a sub looks like? Here’s a quick snapshot of how long you’d work and how much you’d make on the job.

Substitute Teacher Work Hours

At Scoot we have three different shifts:

  • Full-day, normal school day (8 hours, 8:00am – 4:00pm)
  • Half-Day, Morning (4 hours or less, 8:00am – 12:00pm)
  • Half-Day, Afternoon (4 hours or less, 1:00pm – 4:00pm)

You get to choose how much flexibility you’d like in your assignments. Whether you want to be a day-to-day or a long-term sub, it’s all up to you!

Nevada Substitute Teacher Pay

In general, pay levels vary based on assignment length, schools taught at, your highest certificate level, and the role assigned.

Nevada substitute teachers can make from $60 to $200 per day. If you work with Scoot, you’ll get competitive pay compared to the market standard.

Here’s a breakdown of how much you can make in each role if you substitute teach with us.

Role Certification / Education Level Half Day Pay Full Day Pay Long-Term Pay
Support/aide position GED Minimum $63 to $65 $125 to $130 $138 to $145
Paraprofessional One of:
– Associates Degree
– 48 credit hours
– Passing of NV para assessment(s)
$65 to $70 $130 to $140 $143 to $154
Lead Teacher No Certificate (Bachelor Degree Minimum) $65 to $80 $130 to $ 160 $143 to $176
Lead Teacher NV Substitute License $70 to $85 $140 to $170 $154 to $187
Lead Teacher NV State License $75 to $90 $150 to $180 $165 to $198
Special Education Teacher NV Special Education License N/A $250 N/A

Ever since the teacher shortage has afflicted the nation, schools are in dire need of permanent and substitute teachers alike. As a result, some school districts, like Clark County, have increased pay to attract substitute teachers to low-income schools. Douglas County is giving incentive bonuses for subs.

Steps to become a substitute teacher in New Orleans

Requirements differ across different school districts and agencies in Louisiana. We’ve simplified the process to get you started as fast as 1 week!

Here’s how you can become a substitute teacher in New Orleans with Scoot Education.

Step 1: Apply online

First, begin your application with Scoot online.

You’ll answer some screening questions and upload your resume (if you have one). If you don’t have one, you can fill out our auto-generated questions that build a resume for you.

Then we’ll see if you’re a good match with us. Some things we check for are:

  • What kind of teaching experience do you have?
  • Do you hold any teaching credentials?
  • Do you hold at least a high school diploma or equivalent or higher?
  • If you don’t have classroom experience, have you worked with children before (i.e. tutoring, summer camp, sports)?

Step 2: Go through a phone screen

If your application passed the review stage, you’ll then hop on a phone screen with one of our consultants. What is the phone screen?

The phone screen is just a quick 15-minute call to get to know you. We’ll ask about:

  • What you’re looking for
  • Where you’re located
  • Permits or credentials you might have

Your answers inform us if we have the kind of work that fits your needs.

Step 3: Interview

After you’ve passed your phone screen, we’ll set up a virtual interview with you. This interview will be 30-45 minutes long over video call.

We’ll ask you about your ideal commute time, preferences for grade levels, and more to make sure that you only get assignments that suit your needs!

Before the interview

To streamline the interview process, please upload proof of any teaching credentials you may have. Credentials are NOT needed, but can boost your hiring chances and earn you a higher pay down the road.

Step 4: Submit 3 references

Next, you’ll upload 3 professional references. One of them must be from a current or former supervisor.

Make sure to list people who have worked closely with you and can speak positively about who you are as a person and teammate.

Step 5: Sign offer letter!

That’s it! Once we’ve reviewed your references talking about how awesome you are, we’ll send your official offer letter to your email inbox.

Once you sign, we’ll lead you through your onboarding steps to become an active Scoot sub ready for bookings.

Step 6: Upload official documents

We want to ensure you’ll start earning your paycheck soon after you start subbing.

You’ll upload these items:

  1. Identification documents
  2. Payroll information – all information is stored securely in our systems

Step 7: Pass background checks

Lastly, you’ll pass a criminal background check by getting fingerprinted!

Your submitted fingerprints will be checked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) databases for any criminal records.

How do I get fingerprinted?

To pass a background check, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office anytime between 8 AM to 3:30 PM (appointments are not required)
  2. Bring a valid form of identification and the unique code we’ll send to you via email.
  3. Follow their instructions to get fingerprinted.
  4. Upload the receipt or other document that shows completion of your background check to us.

How much does the fingerprint appointment fee cost?

Fingerprinting fees cost around $40 when you go through the school district’s fingerprinting process.

If you apply with Scoot Education, we reimburse the entire fingerprinting cost  in your first paycheck. You don’t need to pay any upfront cost!

How will I know I passed the background check?

Once you’ve uploaded a copy of your results to your applicant portal, we’ll be checking closely for your results to get back. It should take no longer than 72 hours.

Once we see you’ve passed, you become a fully activated Scoot sub! This means you can start subbing immediately.

Why substitute teach?

There are a variety of reasons why people choose to become substitute teachers. Subs work closely with children, choose their own schedules, and can gain valuable experience before becoming full-time teachers.

Arguably the best part about being a substitute teacher is the fact that you can make your own schedule. You can pick and choose which assignments you want to take on and which days you want to take off.

This flexibility is especially helpful for those who have other responsibilities in their life!

Earn extra money

This goes hand-in-hand with creating your own schedule. Since you can choose the hours and days you would like to work, you can easily substitute teach on the side of another job you have.

Have fun everyday

In contrast to a regular 9-5 office job, substitute teaching comes with exciting adventures every day. Different teaching assignments can bring you to new schools, students, and peers, giving you the opportunity to learn something new every day!

How to become asubstitute teacher in Arizona

We're looking for substitute teachers in Arizona

The teacher certification process in Arizona is super simple. All you need is the Substitute, PreK-12 Certificate. Once you get this teaching certificate, you can keep renewing it every 6 years so you don’t have to complete the application all over again.

The only requirement to getting your Arizona substitute teaching certificate is having a Bachelor’s degree in ANY subject area. It doesn’t need to be education-related.

There is also no additional testing, formal teacher education, or prior student teaching experience required to apply for the Substitute, PreK-12 Certificate.

It is estimated that Arizona schools can barely fill one in five teacher vacancies. With your help, we can fill these vacancies and support our students!

Step 1) Create an account on the Arizona Department of Public Services website

First, before you can apply for an Arizona substitute certificate, you must create an account on the Arizona Department of Public Services’ (AZDPS) website. Follow the steps below to create your account:

  1. Visit the AZDPS page for creating an account and when asked for the type of account you would like to create, select “Individual Personal Account”, then click “Continue”.
  2. Then fill out the rest of the questions with your information. Make sure everything is correct!
  3. Follow the next step to apply for an IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Step 2) Get your IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

The IVP (Identity Verified Prints) Fingerprint Clearance Card is required of anyone who is applying to be a substitute in the state of Arizona.

  1. To start your application, you must visit the AZDPS FCC Form.
  2. Select “Request a Replacement / Apply for a Card for Myself or Someone Else” and click “Continue”.
  3. Sign into your AZDPS account and select “Apply for a New Clearance Card” under “What do you need to do?”
  4. Then, select “IVP” under “Do you require an IVP Clearance Card?”
  5. Next, select “No” under “Have you ever had an IVP Clearance Card before?”
  6. At the end of the Privacy Act Statement, click “Continue”.
  7. After that, under “Reason(s) for Applying”, fill in the information that fits you best.

  11. Under “Applicant Signature”, click the box to authorize custodians of records to release information and sign your name under it.

    1. Scoot subs: Select the option to “Submit & Pay by Credit Card” and keep your receipt! Scoot will reimburse this fee on your next paycheck!

Woohoo! Your electronic application has been created and will be matched with your physical fingerprints.

You will receive an email shortly from AZDPS with a 10-digit reference number. Please follow the link in the email to select a location to have your fingerprints taken.

Step 3) Submit your transcripts to the Arizona Department of Education

In order to be eligible for an Arizona substitute certificate, all substitute teachers must have a Bachelor’s degree.

You must request that your accredited college or university submit your official transcripts. These transcripts should document your Bachelor’s degree or more advanced degree and be sent directly to certification@azed.gov or by mail to:

Arizona Department of Education – Certification Unit

P.O. Box 6490

Phoenix, AZ 85005

Got foreign transcripts?

You can request a course-by-course evaluation completed by an approved Foreign Credential Evaluation Agency to identify the equivalent degree in the United States and submit them directly to certification@azed.gov.

Bachelor’s degree transcripts and foreign transcripts submitted by the applicant via the online portal or by email are not considered official so make sure that your institution submits your transcripts directly to certification@azed.gov.

Step 4) Create an account on the Arizona Department of Education (AZED)’s website

Once your IVP fingerprint is on file, you can create an account on the AZED’s website.

Your fingerprint must be verified and on file before you can complete this step!

You can use your application number to check on the status of your fingerprints or wait until you get the physical card in the main to know when your fingerprints have been verified.

Step 5) Submit your application

Get excited! Once your IVP fingerprint is on file and you have created your AZED account, you can submit your documents:

  • A photocopy of your IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Your transcripts

Once all your documents are submitted, your Arizona substitute certification application is complete and all you need to do is wait 3-8 weeks for your application to get approved.

After your application is approved, you’ll receive your Substitute, PreK-12 Certificate in the mail. Now, you are ready to teach!

Become a Substitute Teacher in Florida: 6 Steps in 2024 https://scoot.education/scoot-guides/how-to-become-a-substitute-teacher-in-florida/ Thu, 07 Sep 2023 11:54:05 +0000 https://scoot.education/?p=15105 So you’re interested in how to become a substitute teacher in Florida. As of 2024, all you need to get started is:

  • A high school diploma
  • A background check
  • A few references and ID documents

Since the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) does not standardize how to become a substitute in their state, each county and school district has their unique application process. This means you have to submit a new application each time you apply to a new district.

But if you apply to an educational staffing company like Scoot, you need only apply once to teach at multiple school districts. We also help place you in the right educator positions suited to your classroom and schedule preferences.

Our guide will explain everything you need to know about how to become a substitute teacher in Florida in 2024.

Steps to become a substitute teacher in Florida

Take these 6 steps to become a Florida substitute teacher with Scoot:

  1. Submit your application
  2. Go through a phone screen
  3. Complete a virtual interview
  4. Upload official documents
  5. Pass your background check
  6. Receive your offer letter!

Step 1: Submit your application

First, start your application online.

  1. Fill out basic contact information and complete an initial questionnaire.
  2. Upload your resume. No worries if you don’t have one. You can answer some questions about your professional background instead.
  3. Hit submit!

If your application is accepted, you’ll be contacted within 2-5 business days for a phone screen.

What if I only have a high school diploma?

No problem! A high school diploma is all you need to become a substitute teacher with Scoot Education.

Generally, schools within Florida counties have easy-to-meet educational requirements for substitute teachers. These vary from county to county; from high school diploma to 60 or more college credits. Some districts may require a minimum GPA.

But with Scoot, you don’t have to worry about district-specific requirements! We partner with a variety of schools, so we’ll let you know which of our partners have stricter requirements and how you can meet them should you want to teach there. And you definitely don’t need a Bachelor’s degree to become a substitute teacher in Florida.

Step 2: Jump on a quick call with a Scoot consultant

Next, schedule a quick phone call with one of our consultants.

The phone screen is just a 15-minute call to get to know you. Expect to briefly explain:

  • What you’re looking to get out of teaching
  • Permits or credentials you might have
  • Where you’re located

Your answers inform us if we have the kind of work that fits your needs.

Step 3: Complete a virtual interview

If we seem to be a good fit, you can schedule time for a virtual interview.

Before the interview, you’ll upload proof of your teaching credentials IF you have any. These may be:

  • A teaching certificate issued by the Florida Department of Education (Temporary or Professional). You can check your status online.
  • A Statement of Eligibility issued by the Florida Department of Education
  • Proof of completion of a substitute teacher course or workshop

What’s the virtual interview like?

The interview will be 30 to 45 minutes long over video call.

We’ll ask you about your ideal commute time, preferences for grade levels, and more to make sure that you only get assignments that suit your needs!

Step 4: Upload official documents

Great job! Once you’ve passed your interview, we’ll invite you to submit the following documents:

  1. Identification documents (ID, SSN, etc.)
  2. Three references including at least one supervisor
  3. Payroll information

Providing references is an important step in this process. We want to learn more about you through the praise of others!

List people who can positively attest to your job performance and teaching skills. Remember, you must reach out to at least one current or former supervisor if you’re applying to Scoot Education.

Step 5: Pass your background check

Next, you’ll have to pass a background check to ensure you can provide a safe experience for students.

To complete a background check, you must submit your fingerprints to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Your fingerprints will be checked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) databases for any criminal records.

How do I get fingerprinted?

To pass a background check, follow the steps below:

  1. Complete a background authorization form that we provide
  2. Find your nearest Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved LiveScan location
  3. Go to the location with your official ID documents

Where can I complete my LiveScan?

These are the FDLE approved LiveScan locations in the counties Scoot Education serves:

How much does the fingerprint appointment fee cost?

Fingerprinting fees can range from $71 to $81 when you go through the school district’s fingerprinting process.

If you apply with Scoot Education, we reimburse the cost up to $90 for the live scan in your first paycheck.

Step 6: Receive your offer letter!

Once you’ve completed all the steps and gotten approved, you’ll receive your offer letter in your email. Then, we’ll help you get set up as a Scoot employee in our online systems.

Commonly asked questions

1. Do I need a Florida substitute teaching license or certificate before applying?

No, you do not need a Florida substitute teacher license to start subbing in Florida. The state does not issue a substitute teacher specific credential.

2. How much does a substitute teacher make in Florida?

A Florida substitute teacher salary depends on assignment length, type of role, school district, and certificate level.

On average, a substitute teacher’s pay in Florida is around $120 per full day or $35,000 annually according to Indeed.

With Scoot, you can expect to earn market leading pay. We take pride in paying our teachers as well as or even better than school districts and competitors.

3. How do I get booked?

If you work with Scoot, you get to use our in-house app Scoot 2 Work. Scoot 2 Work lets you set your daily or recurring availability to work.

Your personal consultant takes the guesswork out of choosing a job by choosing assignments that best suit your preferences! We check your availability and if we have a position for you, we’ll call you in the morning to see if you’d like to go. We can also schedule you weeks in advance.

This blend of tech and human interaction helps ensure the right classroom-teacher match every time.

4. Why should I apply to Scoot Education instead of directly to school districts?

If you apply directly to school districts, you’ll spend more time researching each county’s unique requirements and applying rather than finding assignments and teaching.

Moreover, you’ll likely have to complete an FLDOE-approved substitute teacher preparation program and apply for a Florida educator certificate on top of all the background checks and references you’ll complete and submit.

Although the requirements are easier to meet compared to other states, the certification process is just slightly more complicated and time consuming than if you applied through an agency like Scoot Education.

You can start subbing in as fast as 3 days with Scoot! Whereas, hiring and onboarding could take 2-4 weeks with the county.

At Scoot, we’ve streamlined the process for our applicants and schools without compromising on the quality of our educators. You’ll still be well trained and prepared to step in the classroom without taking extra steps.

Why substitute teaching is an excellent career choice

teacher helping student at desk

Whether you plan to stay in education long-term or be a part-time sub, substitute teaching gives you valuable life experience you can be proud of putting on your resume.

Make a difference in your community

Substitute teachers are incredibly valuable to their school districts and students, because they help keep things moving when teachers call out of work

Even if you only see your students for one day out of the week, you become an essential person who helps keep students’ education on track.

Learn transferable job skills

As a sub, you will pick up on valuable skills such as public speaking, thinking on your feet, and classroom management. You’ll also learn how to create a positive, inclusive learning environment for students.

No matter what profession you end up in, you’ll always leverage the interpersonal, managerial, and problem solving skills you picked up as a substitute teacher.

Create your own schedule

Arguably the best part about being a sub is that you can make your own schedule. You can always communicate with us when you want to work and which days you want to take off.

Have fun everyday

In contrast to a regular 9-to-5 office job, substitute teaching comes with exciting adventures every day. Different teaching assignments can bring you to new schools, students, and peers, giving you the opportunity to learn something new every day!

Steps to become a substitute teacher in Washington DC

Washington DC Capitol building

You may find requirements differ across different school districts and agencies in DC. Requirements and application processes differ because the District does not offer a standard substitute teacher certification and does not standardize the process to become a sub.

As a result, each school has its own hiring and onboarding requirements and protocols for substitute teachers.

For example, the DCPS (District of Columbia Public Schools) only requires subs to have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours, while other schools and agencies require subs to hold a bachelor’s degree before starting to teach.

In this guide, we’ll detail the 7 quick and easy steps to become a substitute teacher in DC with Scoot Education. With just one application, you’ll be able to teach at a variety of schools as a Scoot sub.

  • Do you have 60 college credit hours?
  • Do you have a clean, professional, and grammatically correct resume?

Some examples of acceptable teaching credentials are:

  • Copy of your teaching certificate issued by the District of Columbia
  • Proof of completion of a substitute teacher course or workshop

Step 4: Upload official documents

After your stellar interview, your consultant will let you know of next steps. You’ll upload some important documents:

  1. Identification documents
  2. Payroll information – so you can start getting paid immediately after starting with us!

Step 5: Pass background checks

The District of Columbia requires 3 separate background checks, two of which are criminal and one civil, before you can start subbing:

  • Civil: The Child Protection Register (CPR) which is a non-criminal check to see if an individual has record of substantiated abuse or neglect of a child
  • Criminal: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) which includes criminal and sex offender records from all 50 states
  • Criminal: The local police department

All local and national records are kept highly confidential. Here’s how you can obtain clearance for each check.

Child Protection Registry

Anyone who wants to work with kids is required to complete and clear the DC Child Protection Registry clearance. You can complete the DC CPR Check Request form online via your applicant portal. The results can take up to 21 business days to come back.

This background check comes at no cost to the educator.

FBI Background Check

To pass your federal background check, you’ll get fingerprinted. Scoot reimburses educators for the FBI fingerprinting fee in their first paycheck!

Here are the steps to get fingerprinted:

  1. Register for an account or login with an existing account on Applicant Services.
  2. Fill out the questionnaire.
  3. Select a location and time for your fingerprinting appointment.
  4. Pay for the $47 fingerprinting fee. Scoot will reimburse you in your first paycheck after your first shift.
  5. Take the form to the appointment.
  6. Download a copy of your receipt to upload to us.

Once you’ve gotten fingerprinted, all that’s left is to upload a copy of your results to your applicant portal. You’ll find the results on Applicant Services. Usually, results are returned on the same day, but sometimes they can take up to 48 hours.

Local Background Check

The local criminal background check will be conducted via Checkr. Checkr provides fast and fair background checks, so you can start teaching quickly.

Step 6: Submit 3 references and pass work history review

Top off your application with these last two pieces: the 20 Year Work History Verification and 3 professional references.

What is the 20 Year Work History Verification?

The School Safety Omnibus Amendment Act of 2018 requires schools to take steps to ensure a positive social and emotional learning environment and to prevent sexual misconduct in schools.

As a result, all substitute teachers in DC must complete a work history review covering the last 20 years of employment history where the scope of their employment involved direct interaction with children.

What do I do to pass the work history review?

In addition to your 3 references for Scoot Education, you’ll input any reference for a job you’ve previously held that involved direct interaction with children.

If there is any overlap between the references you will need to inform them to complete both the Scoot Education Reference as well as the DC 20 Year Work History check.

We’ll contact these references via email, text and/or phone to review your previous work experience.

Step 7: Sign offer letter!

Once you’ve completed all the steps and gotten approved, you’ll receive your offer letter in your email inbox. Then, we’ll help you get set up as a Scoot employee in our online systems.

Commonly asked questions

If you sub with DCPS, you’ll register with their automated system, SmartFind Express. Subs are considered as temporary employees to the DCPS. You will be assigned to jobs on an as-needed basis due to teacher absences or position vacancies. You may also be asked to accept assignments outside of your background or educational training.

  2. Upload your resume. No worries if you don’t have one. You can answer some questions about your professional background instead.
  3. Hit submit!

If your application is accepted, you’ll be contacted within 2-5 business days for a phone screening.

What if I only have a high school diploma?

No problem! Fortunately, you don’t need a Bachelor’s degree to become a substitute teacher in Florida. In most Florida school districts, all you need is a high school diploma to work as a substitute teacher.

Scoot Education doesn’t require Florida subs to have a Bachelor’s degree either.

Step 2: Go through a phone screen

Next, schedule a quick phone call with one of our consultants.

The phone screen is just a 15-minute call to get to know you. It is NOT the formal interview that takes place later. We’ll ask about:

  • What you’re looking for
  • Where you’re located
  • Permits or credentials you might have

After hearing your answers, we’ll let you know the kind of substitute job opportunities we have available that fits your needs.

Step 3: Complete a virtual interview

If we seem to be a good fit, you can schedule time for a virtual interview.

Before the interview

To streamline the interview process, please upload proof of your teaching credentials to Fountain IF you have any.

After your stellar interview, your consultant will email you to submit the following documents:

  1. Identification documents (ID, SSN, etc.)
  2. Three references including at least one supervisor
  3. Payroll information
Submit your fingerprints at a LiveScan location

Pass a background check, following the steps below:

  1. Complete a background authorization form (we provide this form in Fountain)
  2. Get your fingerprinting done at a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved LiveScan location

Scoot will reimburse you up to $90 for the LiveScan in your first paycheck!

LiveScan Locations

Here are FDLE approved LiveScan locations in the counties Scoot Education serves:

Complete 3 mandatory trainings

The last step is to complete three short training courses and quizzes on the following topics:

  • Bloodborne pathogens
  • Mandated reported
  • Sexual harassment

Step 5: Receive your offer letter!

Once you’ve completed all the steps and gotten approved, you’ll receive your offer letter in your email inbox. Then, we’ll help you get set up as a Scoot employee in our online systems.

How do I get booked?

At this point, you might be wondering how do I get booked for substitute teaching assignments?

Our in-house technology and dedicated education consultants ensure the right classroom-teacher match every time.

Scoot 2 Work

Scoot 2 Work is our app, where you can set your daily or recurring availability to work.

Your consultant takes the guesswork out of choosing a job by choosing assignments that best suit your preferences! We check your availability and if we have a position for you, your consultant will give you a call in the morning to see if you’d like to go. We can also schedule you weeks in advance.

The app is not a place to find a list of open assignments. This is so we can always ensure you and the school are getting the best fit.

Why get certified?

Expands your placement options
While you don’t need a Colorado substitute teacher license to get started teaching, it certainly gives you more options and flexibility with where you want to teach. Generally, charter and public schools in Colorado require you to have a substitute teaching certification before you start subbing. Some private schools and teaching assistant positions won’t check for it.
Getting certified is quick and easy
Getting certified as a substitute teacher in Colorado is simple. All you need to do is apply online and pass a background check. Most of our subs have received their authorizations within 1-2 weeks of submitting their application.
Subbing without a certification – it’s possible with Scoot!
As long as you have 48+ hours of college credit, we can place you in a classroom without a substitute teacher authorization. Just note that you may not be able to work at schools that require certified subs. If you don’t have enough college credit, you must obtain a one-year substitute authorization. If you have enough credits, we still recommend that you apply to get certified because it gives you more placement opportunities.

Colorado’s 3 types of substitute teacher licenses

The Colorado substitute teacher license is also known as an authorization. The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) issues three types of substitute authorizations – the 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year – depending on your educational background and experience. The substitute authorization allows you to work as a substitute teacher in any Colorado public school district, BOXES, charter school, or CDE-approved facility school for grades K-12. Here’s a comparison of each authorization type:

1) The substitute teacher license for current students

1-Year Substitute Authorization
The 1-year authorization allows you to be a substitute teacher for a year and is perfect for those who don’t have a bachelor’s degree or are just interested in teaching for a short time.
Requirements to Apply
  • A high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Proof of successful experience working with children
  • $50 application fee

2) The classic substitute teacher license

3-Year Substitute Authorization
The 3-year authorization allows you to substitute teach in Colorado for three years and is ideal for recent college grads and career changers.
Requirements to Apply

3) The experienced substitute teacher license

5-Year Substitute Authorization
The 5-year authorization allows you to substitute teach for five years. It’s ideal for people who already have full-time teaching experience and are now interested in subbing.
Requirements to Apply
  • An active or expired Colorado teacher license (not special services, principal or administrator) OR an active out-of-state teacher license
  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university
  • $90 application fee

Additional documents to submit in your application

You’ll also need to submit these documents for your online application regardless of your type of Colorado substitute teacher license:
  • Fingerprint-based background check on file with the CDE
  • Valid form of government ID
  • Previous work experience
  • Self-disclosure documentation of any:
    • Criminal history
    • Disciplinary actions
    • Issues related to licensure or employment

Where and how do I apply?

Set up your COOL (elicensing) account

Once you’ve gathered all necessary documents, log onto COOL (Colorado Online Licensing) to create your licensure account.
  • Create your lifetime COOL account under your complete legal name
  • You must have an assigned Social Security number
  • Include a personal email address that you check often
Your COOL account is where you will virtually apply for your authorization by submitting the required documents for approval. It will include the status of your application and background check.

Get a background check

To get your fingerprint-based background check, schedule a fingerprinting appointment with one of these approved vendors:
  • IdentoGo
  • American Bioidentity Inc./Colorado Fingerprinting
After your appointment, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will forward the submitted fingerprints to the FBI. Do NOT mail fingerprint submissions to the CDE or the CBI. They will be destroyed for security purposes. You have 30 days from the time the CDE receives your background check to submit a complete authorization application. If you do not submit a completed application within these 30 days, you will need to submit another set of fingerprints.

Use IdentoGo with Scoot for reimbursement

If you’re opting to become a substitute with Scoot, you’ll do a background check via IdentoGo. We’ll reimburse you up to $55 for the fingerprinting fee on your first paycheck – just remember to keep your receipt!

  • Half-Day, Afternoon (shifts up to 4 hours or less, i.e. 1:00pm – 4:00pm)

How much will I make as a substitute teacher?

In Colorado, substitute teacher pay rates depend on certification and the type of assignment. They also vary from district to district.

  • Substitutes with no certification
    • $180/day for full-day assignments
    • $198/day for long-term assignments (15 consecutive days or more)
  • Substitutes who have either a substitute authorization and/or teaching license
    • $190/day for full-day assignments
    • $220/day for long-term assignments (15 consecutive days or more)
  • Substitutes who are certified in Special Education
    • $260/day for full-day assignments
    • $259/day for long-term assignments (15 consecutive days or more)

Steps to becoming a Colorado substitute teacher

Step 1: Determine which substitute authorization to apply for

The Colorado substitute teacher license is called an authorization that varies by year length.

A substitute authorization allows you to work as a substitute teacher in a Colorado public school district, BOXES, charter school, or CDE-approved facility school for grades K-12.

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) issues three types of substitute authorizations – the 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year – depending on your educational background and experience.

If you’re interested in becoming a substitute teacher with a teacher agency like Scoot Education, you won’t need an authorization as long as you have 48+ hours of college credit and pass a background check. If you don’t have enough college credit, you must obtain a one-year substitute authorization.

1-year substitute authorization

This authorization allows you to be a substitute teacher for a year and is perfect for those who don’t have a bachelor’s degree or are just interested in teaching for a short time.

To qualify, you provide:

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Proof of successful experience working with children
  • $50 application fee

3-year substitute authorization

The 3-year authorization allows you to substitute teach in Colorado for three years and is ideal for recent college grads and career changers.

To qualify, you must provide:

5-year substitute authorization

The five-year authorization allows you to substitute teach for five years. It’s ideal for people who already have full-time teaching experience and are now interested in subbing.

To qualify, you must provide:

  • An active or expired Colorado teacher license (not special services, principal or administrator) OR an active out-of-state teacher license
  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university
  • $90 application fee

Additional required documentation

You’ll also need to submit these documents for your online application regardless of your type of Colorado substitute teacher license:

  • Fingerprint-based background check on file with the CDE
  • Valid form of government ID
  • Previous work experience
  • Self-disclosure of criminal history, disciplinary actions, and any issues related to licensure or employment

Here’s a comparison of each authorization type:

Step 2: Set up your COOL (elicensing) account

CDE logo
Once you’ve gathered all necessary documents, log onto COOL (Colorado Online Licensing) to create your licensure account.

  • Create your lifetime COOL account under your complete legal name
  • You must have an assigned Social Security number
  • Include a personal email address that you check often

Your COOL account is where you will virtually apply for your authorization by submitting the required documents for approval. It will include the status of your application and background check.

Step 3: Scan and submit your fingerprints

fingerprinting
After you create your COOL account, you’ll need to submit your fingerprint-based background check to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

You have 30 days from the time the CDE receives your background check to submit a complete authorization application. If you do not submit a completed application within these 30 days, you will need to submit another set of fingerprints.

Schedule a fingerprinting appointment with one of these approved vendors:

  • IdentoGo
  • American Bioidentity Inc./Colorado Fingerprinting

After your appointment, the CBI will forward the submitted fingerprints to the FBI. Do NOT mail fingerprint submissions to the CDE or the CBI. They will be destroyed for security purposes.

Use IdentoGo with Scoot for reimbursement

If you’re opting to become a substitute with Scoot, you’ll do a background check via IdentoGo. We’ll reimburse you up to $55 for the fingerprinting fee on your first paycheck – just remember to keep your receipt!

Step 4: Submit your application

Once you’ve collected all your documents, hit submit! The CDE will evaluate your application within 45 days or sooner of receiving it.

Most of our subs have received their authorizations within 1-2 weeks of submission.

Need a paycheck sooner? Don’t worry, we’ll put you to work immediately!

As long as you have 48+ hours of college credit, we can place you in a classroom without a substitute teacher certification. Just note that you may not be able to work at schools that require certified subs.

Step 5: Apply to schools

Luckily, you can start applying even without an authorization. Certainly, an authorization is required to work in public districts and gives you more placement options. But some charter & private schools don’t require it!

If you’re applying to positions yourself, just look online for schools near you and follow their respective procedures to get hired. The CDE provides a school districts web page where you can find any Colorado district in which you would like to serve and give them a call.

But working with an agency makes applying quick and easy. Apply to become a Scoot sub today and we’ll support you every step of the way to becoming a sub in Colorado.
